Demoscene Outreach Group
The demoscene outreach group was formed one year ago in response to the
noticeable lack of demos at the international computer graphics
conference SIGGRAPH.
Our presentation at SIGGRAPH this year went extraordinarily well. We had
three speakers, Saku Lehtien, Soren Hannibal, and Aaron Foo. The focus
was on the history of the scene, a personal perspective, and an overview
of the benefits of the scene for the members of the scene and for the
graphics community at large.
We packed the room, and had many people in the hallway watching through
the doors. Several scene members were present, including several from
Smash Designs, Purple, OTM, hybrisNEMESIS, and more.
Three demos were submitted to the Animation Festival this year: .the
.product, Live Evil, and Wonder. These were not accepted this year, but
we learned they did cause an discussion among the judges. We pursued the
matter with the chair of the animation festival for 2002. He has agreed
to create a 'real-time animation' category, and work with us in building
awareness in the judges about the technical merits for the category.
Further, we have better plans for involvement next year. These include
moving the presentation portion to a larger format more mainline track
of the conference, involvement in the "Creative Applications Laboratory"
were attendees can run demos live, and a social gather for scene
members.
We will provide more information for submission to SIGGRAPH 2002 in the
next few months. It is important that we have a large number of
submissions from the scene to the Computer Animation Festival. This will
build awareness among the judges and give them a basis for comparison.
